We offer Modern Studies tutoring at National 5 Higher, Advanced Higher and University level. Other qualifications available upon request.

National 5 Modern Studies develops understanding of contemporary political, social and international issues. Students learn to analyse sources, construct supported arguments and reach justified conclusions about real-world topics. The course is assessed through:

  • Answering source-based questions clearly, comparing data and making supported conclusions.
  • Developing explanations beyond basic description.
  • Balancing knowledge with evaluation rather than listing facts.
  • Structuring extended answers logically under timed conditions.
  • Using contemporary examples accurately and selectively

National 5 Modern Studies Assignment

The assignment is worth 20% of the final grade. Students research a contemporary political, social or international issue of their choice and produce a written report under controlled conditions.

Support can include:

  • Selecting a suitable and focused topic.
  • Evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of research sources.
  • Linking findings clearly to conclusions.
  • Structuring analysis rather than repeating research.
  • Support focuses on developing research, evaluation and analytical skills rather than completing work for the student.

Higher Modern Studies develops detailed knowledge and critical understanding of contemporary political, social and international issues. The course emphasises analysis, evaluation and constructing well-supported arguments using up-to-date evidence.

The course has three components:

Question Paper 1 – 52 marks (1 hour 45 minutes)
Question Paper 2 – 28 marks (1 hour 15 minutes)
Assignment – 30 marks (including research stage and 1 hour 30 minutes write-up)

Our Process

Finding the right tutor shouldn’t feel like guesswork. We take the time to understand your needs, recommend the most suitable tutor, and support you as you go – so you can focus on progress, not admin.

Step 1: Understanding What’s Needed

  • What you are hoping tutoring will achieveSubject and level
  • Areas the student would like support with
  • Availability for lessons

Step 2. Recommending a Suitable Tutor

We suggest a tutor based on:

  • Availability that allows consistent lessons
  • Experience with the relevant qualification level
  • Ability to explain the subject clearly
  • A teaching approach suited to the student

Step 3: Lessons Begin

Once timings are agreed, lessons start and continue on a regular basis that suits the student. There is no long-term contract, so families can decide how long they would like tutoring to continue. If circumstances change, we can help adjust arrangements where appropriate.

My daughter was crashing Nat 5 chemistry and had sessions every week with Aminah. She was brilliant. Put her at ease with the first meeting and was very thorough and really made her feel confident going into the exam. She got an A and couldn’t have done it without her.

My son failed his English prelim so we decided to get him a tutor. He worked with Skye online on a weekly basis from Jan-April (before his diagnosis of Dyslexia). Delighted that my son got a B in his English Nat 5! Thanks to Skye for all her support. 🙏🏽 P.S. I would have scored 5/5 if F2F was available which was my son's preference.

Absolutely recommend. Our son did prelims with C grade (English is his second language), we arranged lessons twice a week, with wonderful tutor Michael and three months later got B for the Nat5. Arranging lessons also was very fast, easy process, very welcoming team. Thanks a lot.

Exceptional support for Higher Spanish! We are so pleased with the tutoring our daughter received from Elsie for her Higher Spanish exam. Elsie is not only incredibly knowledgeable, but she was also brilliant at adapting her teaching to suit my daughter’s specific learning style. She made every session engaging and enjoyable, which really helped build my daughter's confidence. Beyond the academics, Elsie was incredibly caring; she messaged after the exam to see how it went and checked in again on results day. She was always reliable, and nothing was ever too much trouble. We also had a fantastic experience with Caledonian Tutors as an agency. They are reliable, responsive, transparent, and a real pleasure to deal with. We are delighted with the grade our daughter achieved, and we will definitely be using them again. Highly recommended!
