National 5 Modern Studies develops understanding of contemporary political, social and international issues. Students learn to analyse sources, construct supported arguments and reach justified conclusions about real-world topics. The course is assessed through:

National 5 Modern Studies Assignment
The assignment is worth 20% of the final grade. Students research a contemporary political, social or international issue of their choice and produce a written report under controlled conditions.

- Structuring analysis rather than repeating research.

Higher Modern Studies develops detailed knowledge and critical understanding of contemporary political, social and international issues. The course emphasises analysis, evaluation and constructing well-supported arguments using up-to-date evidence.
The course has three components:
Question Paper 1 – 52 marks (1 hour 45 minutes)
Question Paper 2 – 28 marks (1 hour 15 minutes)
Assignment – 30 marks (including research stage and 1 hour 30 minutes write-up)
The final grade is based on the combined total of all components.

The assignment is worth 30 marks and 27% of the final grade. Students choose a contemporary political, social or international issue and produce a structured report under controlled conditions.
