Geography Tutoring
Our online Geography tutoring is built around matching you with the right tutor
Geography tutors are typically undergraduates/graduates of degrees such as Geography, Environmental Geoscience, Earth Science and Physical Geography and Geophysics.
We offer Geography tutoring at National 5 Higher, Advanced Higher and University level. Other qualifications available upon request.
National 5 Geography develops students’ understanding of physical and human processes, and how they interact to shape our world. Lessons focus on building clear explanation skills, confident use of maps and data, and structured extended responses.
Assessment
Question Paper – 80%
Assignment – 20%
The course requires students to describe and explain geographical processes in detail, apply case study knowledge accurately, interpret maps and data, and construct structured written answers under exam conditions.
Key Areas of the Course
Physical Environments
- UK weather systems and air masses
- Two landscape types (from glaciated uplands, coasts, rivers or limestone)
- Formation of key landforms
- Land use, conflict and management
Human Environments
- Developed and developing country comparisons
- Population distribution and change
- Urban land use and change
- Rural change in developed and developing countries
Global Issues
- Two issues from climate change, natural regions, environmental hazards, trade and globalisation, tourism or health
- Causes, impacts and management strategies
- Use of numerical and graphical data
Geographical Skills
- Ordnance Survey map skills (grid references, scale, contour interpretation)
- Interpreting graphs, tables, maps and diagrams
- Using case study evidence effectively
Students often need support with:
- Moving from description to clear explanation using geographical terminology.
- Applying case study detail precisely rather than giving generic answers.
- Answering 6-8 mark extended questions in a structured way.
- Interpreting OS maps accurately under time pressure.
- Integrating data and theory when responding to source-based questions.
- Managing time effectively across all three sections of the paper.
National 5 Geography Assignment
The assignment is externally marked and worth 20% of the final grade. Students choose a geographical topic or issue, research it, process information and produce a structured written response under controlled conditions .
Support can include:
- Choosing a focused and manageable topic.
- Selecting and processing relevant data effectively.
- Structuring explanations and conclusions clearly.
- Linking evidence directly to the research question.
Higher Geography develops detailed understanding of complex physical and human processes, and how they interact at local, national and global scales. Students are required to analyse issues critically, apply case study knowledge precisely and use a wide range of geographical skills in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts.
Assessment
Question Paper 1: Physical and Human Environments – 46%
Question Paper 2: Global Issues and Geographical Skills – 27%
Assignment – 27%
The course requires students to describe, explain and evaluate complex geographical processes, apply detailed case study knowledge, interpret a range of maps and data sources, and construct structured extended responses under exam conditions.
Key Areas of the Course
Physical Environments
- Atmosphere: global heat budget, atmospheric and ocean circulation, ITCZ
- Hydrosphere: hydrological cycle, hydrographs, river landforms
- Lithosphere: glacial and coastal erosional and depositional landforms
- Biosphere: soil types (podzol, brown earth, gley) and formation processes
Human Environments
- Population structure, data collection and migration
- Rural land degradation and management
- Rural land-use conflicts and management
- Urban change (housing and transport) in developed and developing cities
Global Issues (two studied)
- River basin management
- Development and health
- Global climate change
- Energy
Geographical Skills
- Ordnance Survey map interpretation and six-figure grid references
- Use of photographs, cross-sections and field sketches
- Interpretation of graphs, tables and statistical data
- Application of skills in unfamiliar contexts
- Students often need support with:
- Moving beyond description to sustained explanation and evaluation.
- Using detailed case study evidence rather than general statements.
- Structuring extended 20-mark responses clearly and logically.
- Applying mapping skills accurately under time pressure.
- Interpreting numerical and graphical data confidently.
- Managing time across two substantial question papers.
Higher Geography Assignment
Students select a geographical topic or issue, carry out research (including fieldwork where appropriate), process information and produce a structured written response under controlled conditions .
Support can include:
- Selecting a focused and manageable topic.
- Processing and organising information clearly.
- Analysing evidence from multiple sources.
- Reaching well-supported conclusions.
Our Process
How Matching Works
Finding the right tutor shouldn’t feel like guesswork. We take the time to understand your needs, recommend the most suitable tutor, and support you as you go – so you can focus on progress, not admin.
Step 1: Understanding What’s Needed
A short conversation or message helps us identify:
- What you are hoping tutoring will achieveSubject and level
- Areas the student would like support with
- Availability for lessons
Step 2. Recommending a Suitable Tutor
We suggest a tutor based on:
- Availability that allows consistent lessons
- Experience with the relevant qualification level
- Ability to explain the subject clearly
- A teaching approach suited to the student
Step 3: Lessons Begin
Once timings are agreed, lessons start and continue on a regular basis that suits the student. There is no long-term contract, so families can decide how long they would like tutoring to continue. If circumstances change, we can help adjust arrangements where appropriate.
