Our online History tutoring is built around matching you with the right tutor

History tutors are typically undergraduates/graduates of degrees such as History, History and Politics, History with History of Art and Law with History.

We offer History tutoring at National 5 Higher, Advanced Higher and University level. Other qualifications available upon request.

National 5 History develops detailed knowledge of the past across Scottish, British and European/World contexts. Students build skills in explaining historical developments, analysing factors and evaluating sources, while structuring clear extended answers under exam conditions.

Assessment

Question Paper – 80% (2 hours 20 minutes)
Assignment – 20% (1 hour, externally marked)

  • The Era of the Great War

Historical Study: British
One British topic, such as:

Across all units, students develop the ability to:

  • Analyse the importance of different factors.
  • Evaluate and compare historical sources.
  • Reach supported, reasoned conclusions.

Students often need support with:

  • Moving beyond narrative to clear explanation and analysis.

  • Structuring balanced “To what extent?” essays with a judgement.
  • Evaluating source usefulness fully (origin, purpose, content, omissions).
  • Managing time across three substantial sections in the exam.

The assignment is worth 20% of the final grade. Students choose a historical question or issue, research it independently, and produce a structured written response under exam conditions.

Support can include:

  • Choosing a focused, workable question.
  • Selecting and referencing relevant sources.
  • Analysing causes and/or impact clearly.
  • Structuring a well-supported conclusion.

Higher History develops in-depth understanding of complex historical issues across British, European/World and Scottish contexts. Students construct sustained arguments, evaluate interpretations and support clear judgements with detailed evidence

Our History Tutors

Our Process

Finding the right tutor shouldn’t feel like guesswork. We take the time to understand your needs, recommend the most suitable tutor, and support you as you go – so you can focus on progress, not admin.

Step 1: Understanding What’s Needed

A short conversation or message helps us identify:

  • What you are hoping tutoring will achieveSubject and level
  • Areas the student would like support with
  • Availability for lessons

Step 2. Recommending a Suitable Tutor

We suggest a tutor based on:

  • Availability that allows consistent lessons
  • Experience with the relevant qualification level
  • Ability to explain the subject clearly
  • A teaching approach suited to the student

Step 3: Lessons Begin

Once timings are agreed, lessons start and continue on a regular basis that suits the student. There is no long-term contract, so families can decide how long they would like tutoring to continue. If circumstances change, we can help adjust arrangements where appropriate.

Working as a tutor for Caledonia tutors has been my best job to date- especially as a student. It has provided me with work experience that is useful and relevant on my CV when applying for internships and super curricula programmes, and has allowed for me to build on my administration skills greatly (especially when it comes to writing emails and time management). It’s also really flexible, as it allows me to work where I want and when I want, and I can choose my hours based on what’s best for my schedule. Working with the students is my favourite part as they really open your mind to a whole new way of looking at your subjects. Being able to have a job where you can have a laugh and be a genuine help to children and teenagers is incredibly rewarding!

I’ve been tutoring with Caledonia Tutors for around three years, teaching maths, physics and computing at various levels. Being able to choose your own hours and fit your work around your own schedule is excellent. Communication between the company and me has always been clear, prompt and professional – whether it’s getting new students or dealing with any questions that come up.

What I’ve found to be the most rewarding is watching students grow in confidence and even start to enjoy a particular subject. It is great to see the progress and help students decide their future. Overall, Caledonia tutors offers a well-organised and professional environment that I would highly recommend to a prospective tutor.

I’ve found the past two years working at Caledonia Tutors extremely rewarding! The work allows me to be flexible and organise my tutoring schedule around other commitments. Caledonia Tutors/Aidan has consistently been communicative and helpful, and I’ve always felt very well supported. My teaching skills and confidence have definitely grown through my work with the company, and it is a job I would highly recommend.

My name is Charlotte, and I work as a Modern Studies tutor with Caledonia Tutors. Tutoring alongside university, the ability to decide how many students to take on has allowed me to easily balance the two aspects of my life. In times when I require guidance I have felt comfortable reaching out to the team at Caledonia Tutors, who always provide helpful responses. Becoming a tutor can feel daunting, but I found the extensive materials on planning and structuring lessons made it a less intimidating process. With this assistance, I have successfully tutored a range of students, watching them develop confidence in their academic abilities and enthusiasm for Modern Studies. For those interested in becoming a tutor or looking to continue their tutoring journey, the supportive and flexible nature of Caledonia Tutors makes it a great choice.

Tutor

Tutoring Maths with Caledonia Tutors has been such a rewarding and flexible role alongside my university studies. I really value how adaptable the work is to my busy schedule – I can plan lessons around my lecture timetable, take extra time for my own revision when needed, and also pick up additional hours during exam periods when students need more intensive support.

One of my favourite aspects has been teaching the Summer Headstart Maths courses. Building relationships with students from the start and watching their confidence and ability grow throughout the year is incredibly rewarding. It’s also amazing to be able to continue tutoring over the summer, meaning I don’t have to give up a job I love just because schools are closed.

Aidan is always approachable, supportive, and trusting, which makes tutoring feel very positive and professional. Tutoring Maths has also helped me stay confident with my core math skills, something that has been a huge advantage during my engineering degree. After a stressful day at uni, helping students feels refreshing and fulfilling.

I was lucky enough to work with Caledonia tutors for 4 years whilst studying at the University of Edinburgh. From the perspective of an employee, the role worked really well in tandem with my studies. The role has the flexibility to determine my own hours for tutorials, paired with the responsibility to manage my time effectively to provide clients with the services they require. In other words, I didn’t have to deal with a manager who gave poorly timed shifts and I was empowered to organise my time myself.

Aside from the logistics, tutoring is an incredibly rewarding job. I remain in contact with clients and students from years ago and it’s such a pleasure seeing students grow into young adults succeeding in lessons, exams, and their future studies.

I come from a family of teachers and it took until this job to fully understand why they loved their work. I highly recommend Caledonia Tutors.

I have been a part of the Caledonia Tutors team for 4 years, working with many amazing students throughout. Helping students through some of their most important years is a highly rewarding role. I love being able to get to know the students and figuring out what learning methods work for them.

The hours are highly flexible and can be tailored easily to what works for both the student and yourself. Despite working fully remotely, staying in touch with the management team is very easy and organising new students or asking any questions is always a quick and simple process.

I worked with Caledonia Tutors alongside my postgraduate studies and found that it was by far the most rewarding part-time work I have experienced. You decide how many hours you’ll be tutoring for each week, so there’s a lot of flexibility to suit your own schedule. Designing your own sessions gives you insight into the behind-the-scenes of teaching while contacting clients and keeping track of your sessions helps you to pick up administrative skills, which are great transferable skills for future employment. The company is very transparent and Aidan is always easy to contact if you have any queries. Hearing back from your tutees about their exam results is really gratifying and makes all the effort you put into creating and delivering your sessions entirely worth it.

My experience with Caledonia Tutors was greatly rewarding and professionally enriching.

Aidan provided an abundance of high-quality SQA resources, which offered clear structure and guidance when planning and delivering lessons. Aidan regularly checked in on my workload, ensuring I felt supported while also giving me the flexibility to manage my tutoring hours alongside my full-time Master’s degree.

I thoroughly enjoyed building strong relationships with my students and watching their confidence, skills, and love for English grow over time. It was especially rewarding to see students actively engage with the subject and work towards their academic goals. I would highly recommend tutoring at Caledonia Tutors.

I arranged a a couple of maths lessons for my daughter, at very short notice, who was struggling a little with trigonometry ahead of a test. Her tutor explained things in an extremely easy to understand way and I will not hesitate to use her again down the line if needs be and would encourage anyone in the same boat to do the same.

I found Caledonia Tutors as my son required additional help with school. We started with the maths Headstart course last summer and it was excellent. We chose to continue on with the tutor throughout the year as my son’s grades improved and we wanted to keep them that way. Cannot be faulted, highly recommended.

We have been using Caledonian Tutors for a few years now and they are always top quality. My daughter also did one of the headstart courses for Higher Biology last summer. This was an excellent way to get ahead as she basically covered the first few months of the higher course in a few weeks and Biology is now one of my daughter’s top subjects. Shona delivered the biology headstart (and we kept her as a weekly tutor) and she is excellent, very knowledgeable and friendly. I highly recommend these headstart courses and tutoring in general.

The Headstart Course has helped give me confidence with maths and Daire has been a really helpful tutor. He covers the material well, making it easy to understand, and regularly practiced past paper questions which helped with revision ahead of exams.

My daughter was lacking confidence in maths, so took the Headstart course with Hannah last summer. Covering problem areas in Nat 5 gave Megan a solid base on which to start her Higher Maths course at school. She received weekly tutoring throughout the year, and Hannah was organised, approachable, and always able to find a way to help Megan work through topics she was struggling with. This support allowed Megan to walk into her exams prepared and with confidence. Thank you Hannah.

Meg tutored my daughter for Higher English for six months on and off. An easy relationship was established and Meg gradually challenged her to first stabilise and then improve, resulting in a band 1 A grade. This arose after her school teacher vanished, effectively never replaced. I have no doubt Meg’s tutoring utterly salvaged this particular Higher and gave my daughter insight into the undergraduate experience of studying English literature.

From a parents perspective, Tommy has been a fantastic help to my son in Nat 5 Engineering Science, hugely increasing his confidence in a short space of time.

Pitched at exactly the right level and pace for my son to fill in his knowledge gaps. He thinks he’s turned his Prelim C into an A now!

When needed, my communication with both Tommy the tutor and Aidan at Caledonia Tutors has been responded to very quickly. Highly recommend anyone looking for an Engineering tutor!

Lydia Johnston has been tutoring our son for the last two years, initially for Nat 5 Biology and this year for Higher Human Biology. She’s been a fantastic tutor – focussed and knowledgeable – and most importantly able to make the lessons enjoyable and engaging.
Our son was delighted to pass his exam last year with an A grade and is hoping to do well this year too. He’s enjoyed the subject so much that he’s chosen to continue to Advanced Higher.

Excellent Tutors – Highly Recommend!
My son has been working with Will and Arron for his Nat 5 English and Maths tuition in the lead-up to his exams. He has thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of his lessons and has built a fantastic relationship with both tutors. Thanks to their support, he has made huge progress and is now performing at his highest level in both subjects. His confidence has grown immensely, and he is always eager for his lessons. He’s already asked to continue with Will and Arron at Higher level, which speaks volumes! I highly recommend Caledonia Tutors – they’ve made a real difference.

I am thrilled to share our wonderful experience with Niall, who has been tutoring my daughter in advanced higher chemistry. Before she began working with Niall, she was struggling to grasp essential concepts in her coursework, which left her feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. However, Niall’s exceptional tutoring style has made a remarkable difference in her understanding and confidence.

From the very first session, it was clear that Niall possesses not only a deep knowledge of chemistry but also a genuine passion for teaching. He has a unique ability to explain complex topics in a way that is both engaging and comprehensible. His supportive approach has created a comfortable learning environment for my daughter, allowing her to ask questions freely and explore the subject without fear of judgment.

Thanks to Niall’s guidance, my daughter is now much more at ease with the material. She has developed a newfound confidence in her abilities and is excited about her chemistry studies. The progress she has made is truly impressive, and we are incredibly grateful for the valuable support Niall has provided.

I cannot recommend Niall highly enough! His dedication to his students and his effective teaching methods have made a significant impact on my daughter’s academic journey. Thank you, Niall, for your outstanding support and commitment!

Caledonian Tutors provided excellent tutors at short notice and for a very reasonable price. Following my daughters prelims in December, I requested Chemistry and Physics tutors and her marks increased by two grades when she sat her exams the 5 months later, there is no way she would have achieved this without Caledonian Tutors. Topics that her teachers were not able to explain in a way that made sense to my daughter who has dyslexia, became clear after tutoring. My only regret is not finding out about Caledonian Tutors earlier, worth every penny. Communication between Aiden and tutors with me and my daughter has also been excellent. Massive thanks.

Robbie (Biology) was very helpful in his explanations of topics and concepts. His method of teaching was very clear and concise. He was very understanding and I felt comfortable to ask questions. I was at a working grade D and went up to an A in my final results.

Ben (Physics) was also very helpful as he thoroughly broke down all the topics I struggled with, at very late notice – only a few weeks before the exam, and helped me solidify my knowledge. Again I felt comfortable to ask any questions for when I was confused. I was at a working grade of a B, but with his help I improved it to my final result of an A.

I worked for Caledonia Tutors for my final 2 and a half years at university, and I really enjoyed my time with the company. Seeing students grow in confidence and ability over the course of the year was extremely rewarding. The job was easy to fit around my own studies and I valued the flexibility it gave me. Aidan was always very supportive, and the resources provided helped me plan lessons with confidence. I have already, and will continue to recommend Caledonia Tutors to others looking for a part time job.

I’m so happy we found this amazing tutoring company. We had Lucy as a tutor for my daughter for Nat 5 Maths. My daughter was actually resitting this subject after being let down by the teacher in her school last year, leaving her (and many others) failing the subject. I got her a tutor as her confidence with the subject was completely knocked. Lucy helped her get from the fail last year to an A!!! Thank you so much Lucy! We are looking forward to your tutoring for Higher Maths.

My son received Nat 5 maths tutoring from Finlay and it went really well. Finlay and my son had a good rapport and Finlay really helped him improve his maths, resulting in a good Nat 5 result. This our first experience of private tutoring and would highly recommend Caledonia Tutors, Aidan was really helpful explaining everything at the start of last year.

I came across Caledonia through an advert from the School of Maths advertised part time jobs. Since then it’s been a pleasure to help countless students learn and succeed in their studies.

I have seen how my mathematics understanding can be used to help others and it allows me to see learning from a new perspective that assists with my own studies.

Discovering a student achieved the A grade they wanted is always a bonus! It’s been easy to arrange sessions around my routine and Aidan always helps with any queries I have. It’s more than a convenient part time job, it’s super rewarding and helps build skills the undergrad doesn’t!

Whilst the delivery of the lessons has improved my clear communication and presentation skills. Tutoring with Caledonia Tutors has been a truly rewarding experience. Working with students aged 9 to 16 allowed me to see how personalised guidance can boost both confidence and academic performance. The flexibility of the role made it easy to balance tutoring with my university studies, and communication with the organisers was always smooth and supportive. Aidan and the team consistently ensured tutors had the resources and freedom to tailor lessons to each student’s needs.

Beyond academics, I found it deeply fulfilling to watch students develop curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. Being part of an organisation that genuinely values both tutors and students made my experience at Caledonia Tutors incredibly positive, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys teaching and mentoring.

After failing his prelim in Nat 5 math I reached out to Caledonia Tutors for tutoring for my son and he was matched with Ubaida for weekly tutoring online. Ubaida was brilliant. Ubaida also provided Gregor with math to practice and try between tutoring. We couldn’t be more happy with Gregor’s time working with Ubaida that helped Gregor achieve a B in his Nat 5 exam. Thank you 😊
